Symptoms of TMJ Disorder

Depending on the underlying cause of your TMJD as well as its severity, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

• Lockjaw
• Ringing in the ear
• Dull, thumping chronic headaches
• Pain that radiates in the neck and back
• Clicking or popping of the jaw
• Difficulty eating certain foods

TMJ Treatment Options

Based on our findings during your examination, we may recommend one or more of the following treatment options to relieve your discomfort:

BOTOX Injections

BOTOX can be administered in the overworked and stressed muscles surrounding the jaw joints to help them relax. This can help patients with moderate to severe jaw pain from their condition experience relief for several weeks or even months. While it isn’t a permanent solution to the issue, it’s a great tool to help find relief!

Equilibration/Occlusal Adjustments

In some cases, jaw pain can be due to an unbalanced bite as a result of improperly fitted restorations, like dental crowns, which lead to an imbalanced bite. Our team can adjust the fit of these restorations as well as how the teeth fit together to make sure one or both of the jaw joints are having to take on more force, causing strain.

Occlusal Splints

Occlusal splints are customized, cushioning oral appliances that are designed to shift the jaw into its ideal position as you sleep, reducing the strain from the jaw joints and muscles as well as guarding the teeth from the force of grinding. After days of use, patients notice that their TMJ symptoms drastically minimize or even go away altogether.
