Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling and root planing, most commonly known as a deep cleaning, is often the second line of defense against gum disease, just after improving your at-home oral hygiene routine. This treatment takes place over the course of two steps. First, one of our dentists or dental hygienists will thoroughly remove all plaque and tartar from the surface of the teeth, as far down as the pockets of the gums. We will then move to the roots, removing any hardened deposits of bacteria to allow the gum tissue to healthily reattach to the tooth. The goal of a deep cleaning is to help control and even reverse symptoms of gum disease.

Laser Periodontal Treatment

During the scaling and root planing process, we can also utilize our Sirona soft tissue dental laser to help kill harmful oral bacteria and remove severely damaged gum tissue. Instead of using a scalpel, the laser utilizes a beam of light to gently and precisely get rid of soft tissue. Because it can cauterize the area on-contact, the laser is also effective at minimizing harmful oral bacteria, and it can drastically minimize post-operative discomfort and bleeding.

Antibiotic Treatment

Typically offered in combination with scaling and root planing, our team also utilizes Arestin antibiotic treatment. This involves packing the pockets of the gums, which is the origin of the infection, with small antibiotic microspheres. Over the course of two weeks, the microspheres will gradually release medication to fight off the infection and minimize symptoms.
